GRAMMY D’S SWEETS MOVES TO SYRACUSE

“Since I moved back here, 
everything is falling into 
place.”

 Diena Schwieterman, 1986 SHS graduate made the decision to move home. “As soon as I made the decision, it seems like everything began falling into place.” 
 Diena is the daughter of Bart Schwieterman and Carla Jantz. She has four siblings of which she is the oldest - DeLora Karavolas, Mike Schwieterman, Levi Schwieterman, and Whitnie Housholder.
Growing up in small town Syracuse, she said, “We didn’t know a stranger. Everyone knew what we were doing. We knew our parents would be told so we had to be good. And when we weren’t, our parents found out quickly. “
After graduation, she studied for a year at Garden City Community College. She moved to Denver, Colorado, to stay with her grandmother and had her oldest son. After, she moved to Wichita for a time but eventually settled in Pueblo, Colorado. 
For the next 28-30 years, Diena put down roots raising her family there. She worked in accounting, human resources, and as an office manager. She has three kids, two sons and a daughter, five grandsons and one granddaughter. Grammy D loves spending time with them. 
While she has always baked for her grandkids, in 2020, Diena began baking at home and giving her baked goods away. Her niece said she needed to start charging for her work and opened up a business Facebook page called Grammy D’s Sweets & Treats. 
Diena wasn’t sure but the orders began pouring in. 
“I got a few orders quickly, mostly from family, and friends of family. Then word of mouth made my business grow. A couple years ago, I moved to KC to help family but I continued to get a ton of business from Syracuse. I started coming to Syracuse three times a month to visit, watch family’s sporting events, and bring deliveries.”
The more she was in Syracuse, the more Diena realized she needed to be here. Her dad is here. The Thomeczeks and Schwietermans are here. “I thought why would I move here? Then I realized, why wouldn’t I?”
Diena keeps busy. She works at Hamilton County Hospital as a CNA, has a tax business on the side,  and the bakery has exploded since moving back. 
Diena said, “It’s a custom bakery, everything is made fresh. And she is open to trying everything including sugar free and dairy free options. She has made cookies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, cake pops, for all sorts of occasions. She has an edible printer to make edible images. 
She has made and shipped wedding desserts and goodies to Florida, Idaho, and even engagement cookies for someone in Beverly Hills. She does desserts for birthdays, graduations, baby showers, and more. She is proud to have many returning customers. 
“I had a goal to make edible business cards. I have a lot of ideas. If you can print it, I can do it.”
While she never pictured herself returning to live, Diena is loving being back home. “Everything has been so amazing. It was meant to be. Her kids and grandkids are in Colorado and Kansas City so the location is optimal.”
As her business grows, her mind considers more possibilities like a storefront or renovating a minibus and having a traveling bakery.
