BULLDOGS TAKE SECOND AT REGIONALS - HEADED TO STATE
The Syracuse High School boys golf team battled breezy conditions on Monday May 13 competing in the 2-A Regional meet on their own Tamarisk Golf Course.
Adjusting to windy conditions and competing at home paid off for the Bulldogs Monday, placing second, qualifying to compete at the state meet, Monday and Tuesday May 20 and 21 in Dodge City.
Scoring a 352, they were eight strokes behind first place Hutchinson Trinity Catholic. Leading scorer was Charlie Keller, tying for second with a 79, followed by tenth place Brody Keller with an 88. Rounding out the team score was Mason Scott, 89, Johnny TeVelde, 96, Jarret Scott, 96 and A.J. Rivas, 97.
Watching the golfers compete, one could not help but notice a lot of familiar faces helping to run the tournament. Many markers and scorekeepers were local golfers, but two head coaches, the Bulldog’s Chase Keller and the Sublette Lark’s Kiah (Rash) Feaster were both members of state champion teams coached by former boys and girls head coach, Rick Mathias.
Rick was also at the course, helping organize and making sure the meet was running smoothly. He said it was really cool and gratifying to see Keller and Feaster coaching!
“But look who the girls have coaching them in the fall? Jeff (Mathias) and Meghan (Houstma)!” said Rick. Jeff and Meghan were also members of Rick’s championship teams, bringing home medals.
“I love to see all of them paying it forward,” added Rick.
Head coach Chase Keller challenged the team at the beginning of the season, asking what their overall team goal was that they wanted to achieve and they all said that they wanted to make it back to state.
“They achieved that goal by placing second in our 2A regional,” said Keller, “It was another windy tournament, but the boys powered through and took care of business.”
Charlie Keller shot his season low round finishing with a 79, tying for 2nd place overall. Keller added, “After the tournament, the boys kept saying that the job isn’t done yet as we head to Mariah Hills next Monday to compete for a state title.”
