Labor Day Weekend at the Sand Dunes

Labor Day weekend found the Syracuse Sand Dunes park packed. Campers, pickups and tents were everywhere- on the east and west side of the bridge, under the trees, and at the campsites. 

There were 105 new one year OHV permits sold this weekend, 560 day passes, and all electrical spots were sold out and 47 dry camping spots sold nightly.

 City Administrator Brian Bloyd said, “Memorial Day weekend was our biggest weekend this year and this was about half of that. But still it was a bigger weekend than years before.” 

Ali Tarman, manager of U-Pump-It said, “Fuel sales were way up as well as ice, cigarettes and chewing tobacco.”

Shylah Booker, manager of Loves said “It was a good weekend for us! It was good for all the stores in Syracuse. We needed it!” 

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has been busy this year particularly at the Syracuse Sand Dunes. 

The Sheriff’s Office patrols the whole area to keep the area safe for everyone. There have been eight accidents at the Sand Dunes this year. Sheriff Mike Wilson said, “Overall, we get many out at the dunes, especially during the holidays. Most people act responsible and are there just to have a good time.”

City Fire chief David Stimatze adds, “I asked that we could be notified every time there is an accident at the sand dunes. An ambulance may be able to get out there but depending on the location in the dunes they might not be able to get out. And timing is crucial. “

They are also able to assist with removing someone from a vehicle. 

One accident that occured this weekend at the sand park was a side by side vehicle with a roll bar and equipped with seat belts. 

“The Sand Dunes are fun but like any other activity, you need to exercise caution.”
