Alfred Hampton

Alfred Frederick Hampton, age 89, of Wyandotte, Oklahoma, was called home to heaven by his Lord and Savior on November 5, 2025 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.

He was born on September 19, 1936 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, to Fred and Ruth Adeline (Clay) Hampton. He attended public schools in Pawhuska and Fairfax, Oklahoma. He graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1955. Al attended Northeastern State College (now Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree with a Major in Music in 1959. He earned a Master of Music Education degree from Wichita State University in 1975. He taught instrumental and vocal music in the public schools of Oklahoma and Kansas for thirty-seven and a half years, beginning his career in Fairland, OK, from 1959-1964. After retiring from full-time teaching, he worked as a substitute teacher and then a teacher’s aide, retiring completely in 2006, after spending forty-six years in public school education.

Al accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior when he was 19 years old. He was baptized at the Calvary Baptist Church in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairland, Oklahoma, when he passed.

Al was a bachelor for many years until being united in marriage to Janet Kay Webber at Grant Avenue Baptist Church in Chanute, Kansas, on May 26, 1973. They were blessed with two children: a son, Clay, and a daughter, Amy.

Outside of teaching music in schools, Al was active in church choir, band, and bell choir as either, a member or director. He played the string bass, tuba, and violin, and Janet accompanied him on the piano. Music was an important part of Al and Janet’s life as they were able to share their music ministry together.

Al enjoyed some special vacations to Seattle, Washington; Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico; Mount Rushmore, South Dakota; and Medora, North Dakota. Other trips included activities in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, and Nevada. He enjoyed camping with the Webber family and with his own family after getting married. One of his favorite places was going to Roaring River in Missouri and fishing for trout. His family also enjoyed fishing there.

Al was also very proud of his Native American Heritage. He was a member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and enjoyed attending tribal gatherings and Pow Wows. In 2007, he enjoyed the bus trip to the Eastern Shawnee native lands in Ohio with other tribal members. He was a long-time University of Oklahoma Sooners fan, and his children and most of his grandchildren have followed in his footsteps.

Al enjoyed being a dad to Clay and Amy. He played games, read to them, took them to the park to play, attended their school activities, and they attended church every week as a family. They even shared special music at church as Clay and Amy joined their parents on the tambourine, then trumpets as they grew up. When Al became a grandpa, he liked to read to the grandchildren, play games, and there was usually a musical jam session while they were visiting.

Al was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Ruth Adeline (Clay) Hampton, brother Ennis Frank Hampton and wife Dorothy, sister Helen Adeline (Hampton) Bailey and husband Jack, nephew Freddie Perry Bailey, niece Margaret Ann (Hampton) Gilmartin and husband John, niece Sheila Jo (Bailey) Broyles, Jacqueline Ann (Bailey) Warren and husband Tony, in-laws Lloyd Gene and Cleo Lorraine Webber, sister-in-law Karen Jean Webber, brother-in-law, Bruce Seybold, and great nephew-in-law Nathan Wayne Cunningham.

Al is survived by his wife, Janet Kay, of the home, son Clay Gene Hampton and wife Lacey Lynn, and daughter Amy Lorraine (Hampton) Maddy Rinker and husband Jeffrey Scott, seven grandchildren: Tess Elizabeth Sumner, Hailey Jo and Jalyn Kate Hampton, Erin Elizabeth and Benjamin James Maddy, Isaac Albert and Hannah Elizabeth Rinker, great nieces Cindi Jo (Broyles) Smith and husband Curt, Kati JuneAnn Broyles, Helen Marie Warren, and great-nephew Derrick Lee Warren and wife Sara, sisters-in-law Barbara Ann (Webber) Seybold, and Colleen Ruth (Webber) Dennis and husband Loren, niece-in-law Sarah Lorraine Cunningham and husband Steve and their son, Noah, and other nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Fairland, Oklahoma, with the Rev. Andy Krebs officiating. Interment followed the memorial service at Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens in Miami, Oklahoma.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fairland First Baptist Church. Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairland is entrusted with the arrangements.
