Lakin—Larry Vaughn Meyer, 67, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Common Spirit-Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born September 19, 1958, in Ulysses, he was the son of the late Duane W. and Loretta Mae (Stephen) Meyer. On January 24, 1978, Larry married Kimberly Jo Bates in Clayton, New Mexico.

Larry grew up in Syracuse and graduated with the Class of 1976 from Syracuse High School. After graduation, he began his career with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). He briefly relocated to Holly, Colorado, to help with his wife’s family farm. In 1985, Larry and his family returned to Syracuse, where he resumed his work with KDOT. He dedicated his career to KDOT, retiring as a Construction Manager after earning many awards and achievements, including Inspector of the Year in 2003 for his commitment to Excellence. Most recently, he was honored for his remarkable 49 years of service in 2025.

In 1988, the Meyer family moved to Lakin. Larry and Kimberly were active in their professional roles and deeply involved in supporting their children’s schools, activities, and endeavors. Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, music, dancing, trivia, and especially smoking meats and cooking for his family and co-workers. He took great pride in maintaining his yard, was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and cherished the annual fishing trips to Gunnison, Colorado with his close friends. Larry loved his family, community, state, and country, living a life marked by service in excellence to all. Above all, he treasured time spent with family and friends, creating countless joyful memories that will be cherished forever.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Kimberly Jo Meyer; three children: Nicholas Paul and Claudette Meyer of Corpus Christi, Texas, Saeree Louise Hunnicutt of Colorado, and Eric Lyle Meyer of Lakin; five grandchildren: Izaac and Jessykka Meyer of Kodiak, Alaska, Jordan Brink of Lakin, Kiera Brink of Garden City, Izabella Meyer of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Layne Hunnicutt of Colorado; one great-granddaughter, Kamryn Jo Rupp of Garden City; three brothers: Don and Patsy Meyer of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Mitch and Jerri Meyer of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Basil and Karen Meyer of Lakeville, Minnesota; one sister, Susan and Rich Farson of Pekin, Illinois; 2 aunts, Lana and Larry Odle of Stockton, Kansas, Lorene (late) and Don Alexander of Carmichael, California; 1 uncle LeRoy (late) and Barb Stephen of Phillipsburg, Kansas; 1 great aunt Arlene (Jorgensen) Wolfe of Hays, Kansas; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nephews.

Larry is also survived by his mother-in-law, Stella Bates of Granada, Colorado, and was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John Bates. Larry leaves behind two sisters-in-law: Cynthia and Jim Fletcher of Holly, Colorado, and Jennifer and Jerry Steward of Holly, Colorado; as well as one brother-in-law, Curtis and April Bates of Phoenix, Arizona; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, with Reverend Nathan Haeck officiating. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 PM on Saturday at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Stockton. Friends may call from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday and from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
