Betty Lou (Baskin) Vanderpool

Betty Lou (Baskin) Vanderpool, age 86, passed away at the Poudre Valley Hospital on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. She was born on October 16, 1935 in Brookfield, Missouri, the daughter of Leonard Paul Baskin and Vivian Lucille (Morgan) Baskin.

Shortly after beginning her life in Brookfield, she moved at four months old to Memphis, Tennessee until she was seven. In 1942, she moved to Chillicothe, Missouri and attended Chillicothe High School. While in high school as a teenager she started her first job as a waitress at the Cabin in the Valley café in LaClede, Missouri where she worked for three years on the weekends. She then started working fulltime as a waitress at Harold’s Café in Chillicothe, Missouri. In 1954, she married Garland Newton and to this union five children were born, Mark, Lesa, Mary, Louann and Jason. She began helping her husband Garland with his job working at the Constitution Tribune where she would take phone calls concerning the newspaper delivery and paper routes. After 23 years of marriage and at the age of 42 her husband Garland passed away. On February 3, 1986, she married Ralph Raymond Vanderpool, Jr. and they later moved to Syracuse, Kansas. In 2020, she moved to Evans, Colorado to be close to her daughter because of her health and medical conditions and resided there until her passing.

Betty was a member of the Southern Baptist Church and also was part of the PTA in her children’s school and helped out in many school events. She enjoyed doing a lot of things in her earlier years where she played softball, roller skating, basketball, swimming hunting, target shooting, and gardening. She also enjoyed baking and cooking for her family but her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends.  

She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Paul Baskin, her mother, Vivian Lucille (Morgan) Baskin, her first husband, Garland Newton, her second husband, Ralph Raymond Vanderpool, Jr., her son, Mark Shane Newton, her brother, David Lee Baskin, and her sister, Mary Helen Manning
She is survived by her son, Jason (& Amanda) Newton of Salina, KS, three daughters - Mary (& husband Robby) Carter of Syracuse, KS, Louann (& husband Danny) Bliss of Evans, CO,  Lesa (& husband Henry) Jacques of Arizona, her brother, Paul (& wife Linda) Baskin of Kansas City, KS, fifteen Grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren. And many family members and friends.

Graveside Services were held Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 10:00 AM (CDT) at the Edgewood Cemetery, Chillicothe, Missouri.

Visitation was held August 26, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
