Shannon Craig Thompson, of Lone Jack, MO, a man of wit, wanderlust, and unwavering honesty. He passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the age of 56. Surrounded by the warmth of family and friends at Saint Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza, Shannon’s journey came to a peaceful close. Born on November 2, 1968, in Ulysses, Kansas, to Harold and Lois (Randles) Thompson, Shannon was the 6th of 7 siblings, who embraced life with an adventurous spirit.

Growing up in Syracuse, Kansas, Shannon built the foundations of his character. After high school, he proudly served his country for five years in the United States Air Force. His time stationed in Germany ignited a lifelong passion for travel and learning, broadening his horizons and enriching his perspective.

Upon his honorable discharge, Shannon’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education. He earned an Associate of Science from Garden City Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Pittsburg State University, and a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Central Missouri.

Shannon’s career was as diverse as his interests, ranging from working in State Parks and the post office to laying fiber optic cable and ensuring quality control in labs, ultimately finding his calling with the Department of Homeland Security.

Outside of work, Shannon’s greatest joys were found in simple pleasures: cherished moments with family and friends, exploring new places, immersing himself in the outdoors, enjoying a good movie, and, of course, indulging in delicious food. Though he never married, his heart was full with the love of his expansive extended family. Shannon had a remarkable gift for connecting with people; it was rare for a conversation to end without a new friendship blossoming. Known for his candid nature, Shannon was always true to himself, speaking his mind with refreshing honesty.

Shannon was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harold and Lois Thompson; his sister, Rhoebe Thompson; his brother, Nathan Thompson; his sisters-in-law, Peggy Thompson and Nancy Hannon; and his dear nephew, Tyler Brummett, niece, Kacey Carlson, and great-niece, Maxwell Loder.

He is survived by his devoted siblings: Gay (Clarissa) Thompson, Mort (Alton) Thompson, Twila and Bobby Diehl, and Amber and Troy Settles. Shannon’s memory will also be cherished by his numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews, all of whom will carry his spirit forward.

A celebration of Shannon’s remarkable life was held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at the Langsford Funeral Home in Lees Summit, Missouri. A graveside service at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri, will be announced at a later date. Additionally, friends and family are invited to a second celebration of life in Syracuse, Kansas, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM MDT at the Veterans Building on North Main Street.
