Violet Jones

At 10:42 AM MDT on Sunday morning Violet Jones took her last breath and was immediately ushered into her eternal home, where God had prepared a place for her. And where she has joined with many of her family and dear friends once again. Violet, the 7th born of 12 children of William and Anna Mueller, was the final member of her family group to depart this earth (at almost age 98). She had been living at Hamilton County Longterm Care for about two years.

Violet was Born January 24, 1927, in Stafford, KS. At around age 4, she and her family relocated to a farm north of Kendall where they lived for many years. (She was Christened in 1938, at the Lakin, KS Baptist Church). Following high school she enrolled in a two-year teaching program at Bethel College, Newton, KS. Most of her adult life was spent as a Mother and homemaker. Before she had children, she occasionally taught in small rural one-room schools and later served periodically as a substitute teacher in the area.

She married Paul Henry Franklin Jones on August 14, 1948, at what was then known as The Pilgrim Holiness Church (now The Wesleyan Church), Syracuse, KS. Paul and Violet had four children: Jerry David, Janice Irene, Victor Paul, and Valerie Ann. Paul and Violet farmed and lived North of Kendall for nearly 70 years. Violet loved teaching Bible stories to children and teens at the church. In addition, she found great joy in leading Bible studies with young girls in the community, seated around her kitchen table. She and Paul enjoyed seeing much of the world. With their adventuresome nature, they both developed a love for visiting other parts of the world, offering their time and skills to various missionary organizations in 20+ countries. (They redefined the meaning of “vacation.” It always included working and serving others.)

With her Nikki sewing machine, she was often observed sewing, and making clothes for her family as well as neighbors. She became known as the “rug lady” - making lovely, colorful floor rugs from various scraps of double-knit cloth. And if someone needed a haircut, she was often the one to provide it. Violet also enjoyed making homemade ice cream or grinding wheat for homemade bread. And for family fun, she loved playing a variety of card games. Later in life, this became “date night” for she and Paul, sometimes just the two of them or inviting others to play along. Violet always had room for another guest around her table.

In addition to her four children, Violet has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her offspring are now in Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and Oklahoma.

There were several causes she cared about. This included a special concern for helping young single women who were pregnant and needed encouragement and support, so they could keep their new baby. She also helped sponsor children from various countries around the world so they could attend school, get food and medical care, and be encouraged in their walk with Jesus.

Violet, a good listener, was often sought out to hear their story. She was also known for her ever-ready radiant smile and warmth. And how she never stopped learning (including her smartphone and computer skills in her latter years so she could do the bookkeeping for her church.) Except for the end of life (sometimes affected by a touch of Dementia) she set an example of Jesus’s grace, mercy and love in action. Many who have known her over the years often comment about how her kind, generous spirit had a gentle but profound influence on them. She was also known as a “prayer warrior” - someone who frequently sought intimate time with God.
